Stating that they will play a play-off if they finish the group in second place, Gattuso said, "If I cannot take Italy to the 2026 World Cup, I will leave the country. I already live far away, but I will move even further away.

Italy, which is in second place in Group I with 15 points, 3 points behind Norway with 18 points, has put its chances of leadership in jeopardy as Norway has an average of +26.

With two matches left to play in the group, Italy has an average of +10. Italy will host Norway at home in the last match of the group.
