Forest close to appoint Sean Dyche after Postecoglou’s record-short reign

Nottingham Forest is reportedly in advanced talks to appoint Sean Dyche as their new manager, hoping to finalize a deal on Monday. The Premier League club, sitting 18th, turned to Dyche following the swift sacking of Ange Postecoglou—whose 39-day tenure is the shortest in Premier League history—just 17 minutes after a 3-0 loss to Chelsea.

Forest close to appoint Sean Dyche after Postecoglou’s record-short reign

Forest are desperately seeking stability after a season marked by upheaval. The club, currently 18th in the Premier League table, dismissed Ange Postecoglou immediately following their 3-0 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday. Postecoglou's exit, just 39 days after his appointment on September 9th, sets an unwanted record for the shortest permanent managerial reign in Premier League history.

Dyche becomes standalone candidate

While Forest officials initially held discussions with several candidates, including Roberto Mancini and Fulham manager Marco Silva, Dyche is now seen as the standalone choice.

Interest in Mancini has reportedly cooled, while the pursuit of Silva faces major hurdles. Silva is under contract at Fulham, and his agreement includes a substantial release clause. Given Forest has already paid out to sack two managers this season—Postecoglou and Nuno Espírito Santo (three matches into the campaign)—the financial cost of buying out Silva's contract has become a factor. Furthermore, it is unclear if Silva would be willing to leave Fulham mid-season.

Dyche, known for his ability to organize defenses and steer teams away from relegation, has held positive talks and sources believe a deal could be concluded today.

Dyche's history and experience

Dyche arrives with a track record of stability, having spent nearly a decade at Burnley between 2012 and 2022. During that time, he twice won promotion to the top flight and even guided the Clarets to European qualification in 2018.

His last managerial role was with Everton, where he spent just under two years, securing 17th and 15th-place finishes before being sacked in January. Dyche, who was briefly on Forest's books as a youth player under Brian Clough in the 1980s, is now tasked with utilizing his vast experience to rescue the club’s Premier League season.
