The Guardia Civil confirmed that Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother André Felipe, 26, died at approximately 12:30 AM local time. Initial investigations suggest their Lamborghini suffered a tire blowout, causing it to veer off the road while attempting to overtake another vehicle, subsequently bursting into flames.
The tragedy comes just weeks after Jota had married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, with whom he shared three children. Firefighters from Rionegro del Puente rushed to the scene but were unable to save the two young men.
Liverpool Football Club released a statement expressing their devastation: "Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre." Tributes have poured in from across the football community. Jota's former club, Wolves, where he played before joining Liverpool in 2020, shared their heartbreak: "We are heartbroken. Diogo was adored by our fans, loved by his teammates and cherished by everyone who worked with him... Our hearts go out to the family, friends and loved ones of Diogo and his brother, Andre. You will be truly missed, and always remembered." Atlético Madrid, another of Jota's former teams, also issued a statement of shock and condolences.
In a mark of respect, UEFA has confirmed that a minute's silence will be observed during all matches at the Women's Euro 2025 on Friday and Saturday, including the game between Spain and Portugal, following a request from the Portuguese Football Federation. Pedro Proença, head of the Portuguese Football Federation, stated, "The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva... We lost two champions. The death of Diogo and Andre Silva represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football and we will do everything to, daily, honour their legacy."
