It was emphasized that Ronaldo served one match of this suspension by not playing in the group's final match against Armenia, while the remaining two matches of the suspension were postponed for one year.

FIFA stressed that the decision had not been overturned, only postponed, stating: "If Cristiano Ronaldo commits another violation of a similar nature and severity during the probation period, the penalty specified in the disciplinary decision will be automatically overturned and the remaining two matches will be served immediately in Portugal's next official match. This does not affect any additional sanctions that may be imposed for the new violation."

Ronaldo received a red card for elbowing Irish defender Dara O'Shea in the back during Portugal's 2-0 loss.
