The tournament, organized in Melbourne, started with first round matches.

Men's singles No. 3 seed Zverev, aiming for his first grand slam victory, won 3-1 against Canadian Gabriel Diallo with sets of 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 and 6-2.

Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo (18) continued on his way with a 3-0 (6-3, 7-6, 6-3) win over China's Zhizhen Zhang.

Great Britain's Arthur Fery, who came from the qualifiers, defeated Italian Flavio Cobolli, the No. 20 seed, 3-0 in straight sets 7-6, 6-4, 6-1 and made one of the surprises of the day.

In the women's singles, two-time grand slam finalist and No. 7 seed Paolini defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus 2-0 in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

National tennis player Zeynep Sönmez defeated Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, seeded number 11, 2-1 (7-5, 4-6, 6-4) to reach the second round. Zeynep became the first Turkish female tennis player to win a singles match in the Australian Open main draw.
