Former Fenerbahce stopper Simon Kjaer spoke to the Italian press. Speaking to La gazzetta dello Sport, the Danish player made some striking statements. Kjaer, who quit football last summer, talked about the reasons behind his decision and also talked about his time at Fenerbahce during part of the interview.

'We decided that a compromise was not possible'

Speaking about his decision to retire, Kjaer said, "I found out that AC Milan will not renew my contract in September 2023, so I started to think about what terms I wanted. I had several options, but I realized that I had to compromise. Together with my wife, we decided that it was not possible to compromise on these issues."

'If we had lost Eriksen, I wouldn't have played football again'

Simon Kjaer was on the pitch when EURO 2020 Denmark star Christian Eriksen suffered a heart attack. When asked what has changed since that day, Kjaer said: "Everything. If Christian had gone, I wouldn't have played anymore. I realized that football is football and life is life. Football is work and passion, life is something else."

On the question "What is the most frightening moment in your career?", Kjaer recalled the Trabzonspor-Fenerbahçe match and said, "When I was playing in Turkey, rival fans entered the pitch and tried to beat up the players and the referee. I saw the others running and I realized that I had to run too."
