Roma legend Totti comments on Berke Özer's heroic three penalty saves

The chaotic and painful defeat of AS Roma against Lille has been immortalized by the viral reaction of club icon Francesco Totti. After the Giallorossi missed three consecutive penalty kicks in their 1-0 Europa League loss on Thursday, Totti's voice message, initially sent to a private group of friends via WhatsApp, quickly spread across Italian media.

The legendary captain was incredulous at the team's luck and execution from the spot.

Totti’s reaction to Roma’s penalty blunder

According to reports from Corriere dello Sport and Gazzetta, Totti’s message captured the raw frustration of all Roma supporters.

"Come on, it's a joke, don't kid around," Totti was quoted as saying. "They used to give me a hard time, saying I only scored on penalties and that it was easy to take penalties. This has never happened in football’s history. Three in a row! Only Roma pull off stuff like this, unbelievable."

The dramatic sequence began when Artem Dovbyk missed the first penalty. Roma was given a retake due to encroachment, but the Ukraine international failed to convert the second attempt as well. Finally, Matias Soulé stepped up for the third and final effort, which was also saved. Lille goalkeeper Berke Özer cemented his hero status by saving all three spot kicks.

Totti was not alone in his astonishment. Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini shared the same disbelief after the final whistle, telling reporters he had "never seen three penalties missed like that."
