Bayern seals £65.5m Diaz deal: Liverpool forward heads to Germany!

Luis Diaz is set to embark on a new chapter in his career, with German champions Bayern Munich reportedly agreeing a deal worth €75 million (£65.5m), including add-ons, with Liverpool for the Colombian forward. This development follows Liverpool's earlier rejection of an initial £58.6 million bid from Bayern for Diaz this month.

The 28-year-old was conspicuously absent from Liverpool's squad for their recent 4-2 pre-season friendly defeat by AC Milan in Hong Kong, a decision widely attributed to the swirling speculation surrounding his future. Diaz has now been granted permission by Liverpool to fly from Asia to Europe in the coming days to complete his medical, signaling the imminent finalization of the transfer.

This summer has already seen significant attacking reinforcement for Liverpool, with the arrivals of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike. The Reds are also reportedly interested in Newcastle United's Alexander Isak, suggesting a continued evolution of their forward line.

Diaz joined Anfield from Porto in January 2022 for an initial fee of £37 million. Since then, he has been a key figure for the Reds, scoring 41 goals in 148 appearances. Last season proved to be his most prolific, as he netted 13 goals in the Premier League, contributing significantly to Liverpool's title triumph, and a career-best 17 goals across all competitions.

For Bayern Munich, the acquisition of Diaz provides a crucial attacking boost. The Bavarian giants, who secured their 34th Bundesliga title last season with a league-high 99 goals, faced early exits from both the German Cup (last 16) and the Champions League (quarter-finals). Diaz will help fill the void left by Jamal Musiala, who is expected to be sidelined for a "long period" after suffering a broken leg and dislocated ankle at the Club World Cup.

Why Bayern coveted Diaz?

It's clear why Luis Diaz was an attractive target for Bayern. His shot conversion rate of 18.3% in the 2024-25 Premier League season was his best in the English top flight, showcasing his improved clinical edge. Statistically, many of his other attributes also stood out.

Diaz narrowly missed out on the top 10 in the Premier League for combined goals and assists (18), shots on target (30), chances created (56), and dribbles completed (52). Beyond his attacking prowess, his defensive contributions and relentless work-rate are also evident. He won possession in the final third on 22 occasions, a higher frequency than any other Liverpool player relative to their time spent on the pitch, underlining his commitment to pressing and recovering the ball high up the field.
