"THE LOSERS"

"We were all selfish losers, we weren't a team, we were a group of talented individuals and it never worked," the former Liverpool midfielder previously said on Rio Ferdinand's podcast.

"WE DIDN'T WIN ANYTHING"

Rooney responded to these comments on The Wayne Rooney Show podcast as follows: "Of course we didn't win anything. I wouldn't put it quite like that, but I know what you mean. There were a lot of strong personalities in the dressing room.

I wouldn't say the current England team is better. That would be disrespectful to us, because we worked hard, we tried hard, we didn't get the results we wanted. Looking back, could we have done better with the players we had? Yes, we could have, but we didn't.

It's a different generation. The biggest difference is that media relations have improved dramatically. The players get on better with the press. This creates a more positive impression from the outside. It used to be difficult for Liverpool and Manchester United players to have that kind of relationship. Now it's easier.

Now I talk to Steven all the time, we get together, the relationship is better.

I got on well with everyone, but I knew that Becks (David Beckham), Gary Neville and Scholesy (Paul Scholes) wouldn't get on with Liverpool players.

But I can say this for sure: Everyone worked hard for each other. I don't think that was the problem, we just didn't take that last step."
