The 38-year-old goalkeeper confirmed his decision on social media, reflecting on an almost two-decade journey that established him as a national icon and a respected presence in English football.

Hennessey's career boasts an impressive 109 caps for Wales, making him the most capped goalkeeper in the nation's history. He was an integral part of the squad that captured the hearts of a nation, reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2016 in a memorable tournament run that included a famous 3-1 victory over Belgium in the quarter-finals. He also featured in Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup, despite a red card incident in the latter.

His club career began with Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2006, followed by loan spells at Bristol City, Stockport County, and Yeovil Town. Hennessey then secured permanent moves to Crystal Palace, Burnley, and finally Nottingham Forest in 2022. While his time at Forest was largely impacted by a serious Achilles tendon injury at the end of the 2023-24 season, limiting him to just nine appearances, he was still offered a short-term deal by manager Nuno Espirito Santo in January 2025.

"I have decided to bring my playing career to an end, I look back with gratitude and forward with optimism as I take the next steps on my footballing journey," Hennessey shared, hinting at a potential transition into coaching. While there's no firm confirmation, it's possible he could remain with Nottingham Forest in a backroom staff role.

Hennessey expressed deep appreciation for his journey, stating, "I have amazing memories playing for both club and country. From my early days at Wolves, loans at Stockport and Yeovil, and my time with Crystal Palace, Burnley and Nottingham Forest, each club shaped me both on and off the field."

He emphasized the fulfillment of a childhood dream: "Having been born and raised in north Wales, it was always my dream to play at the highest level. It was a privilege to play in the Premier League and for my country over 100 times." He cited the summer of 2016, with the FA Cup final with Palace and the Euros semi-finals with Wales, as the "pinnacle of my career."

Hennessey made his senior international debut on May 26, 2007, against New Zealand, and earned his final cap in October 2023 against Gibraltar. He acknowledged the support he received throughout his career, thanking his family, agent, fellow goalkeepers, and the fans, who were "the backbone of support."
