The former star for Wolfsburg, Manchester City, Roma, and Inter Milan has joined La Viola on a free transfer, following the expiration of his two-year contract in Istanbul. Džeko has put pen to paper on a one-year deal, which notably includes an option for an additional 12 months. This clause could potentially see him playing top-flight football in Italy until he is 41 years old, a testament to his incredible longevity and fitness.

"ACF Fiorentina announces that it has acquired the sporting rights of the footballer Edin Džeko," read an official statement published on the club's website. "Edin Džeko, born in Sarajevo on March 17, 1986, has signed a contract that will tie him to the Viola until June 30, 2026, with an automatic renewal until June 30, 2027 under certain conditions.”

Džeko, an experienced international with 141 caps and a staggering 68 goals for Bosnia and Herzegovina, arrives at Fiorentina following an impressive season. Last term, he netted 21 goals and provided eight assists in all competitions. This strong performance built upon his first season with Fenerbahçe in 2023-24, where he contributed 25 goals and 10 assists from 46 appearances across all competitions.

His prior stints in Italy's top flight with Roma and Inter Milan saw him accumulate an impressive record of 107 Serie A goals and 50 assists, highlighting his consistent impact in one of Europe's most tactically demanding leagues.

Džeko's signing makes him a rarity in Serie A. Last season, only two outfield players aged 39 or over made appearances in the league: former Como goalkeeper Pepe Reina, who has since retired, and Udinese back-up goalkeeper Daniele Padelli. As it stands, Inter's Marko Arnautović is currently the oldest outfield player in Serie A. Džeko’s arrival means he will now take that mantle, proving that skill, experience, and dedication can defy the typical constraints of age in professional football.
