Martin O'Neill was temporarily appointed to the position vacated by Rodgers in the green-white team, which reached the championship in the Scottish League last season.

The club's largest shareholder Dermot Desmond targeted Rodgers in a statement, saying, "Since the summer transfer window, his words and actions have been divisive, misleading and manipulative. This has contributed to a toxic atmosphere around the club and increased hostility towards board members."

Martin O'Neill, 73, who previously coached Celtic between 2000-2005, won 7 trophies in this period and faced Porto under Jose Mourinho in the 2003 UEFA Cup final.

Celtic, who were disappointed to be eliminated by Kazakhstan's Kairat in the UEFA Champions League play-offs this season, are in second place in the league, 8 points behind Hearts.
