Wilkens, who was selected as an all-star 9 times during his basketball career with the St. Louis Hawks, Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers and Portland Trail Blazers, was one of the best point guards of the 1960s.

In his head coaching career, Wilkens, who led the Seattle SuperSonics to the NBA championship in 1979 and was named coach of the year in 1994, was called the "father of Seattle basketball".

Wilkens was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a player in 1989, as a coach in 1998 and as part of the 1992 U.S. Olympic Dream Team in 2010.

Wilkens, who coached 2,487 games between 1969-2005, holds the title of head coach with the most regular season games in the NBA.
