Twins Send Ace Joe Ryan for Medical Evaluation After Third Straight Struggle
The Minnesota Twins sent ace Joe Ryan back to Minnesota for further medical evaluation after he struggled in his third consecutive start.
Manager Derek Shelton said Ryan has been dealing with back and glute issues, prompting an examination by the team's medical staff. Ryan allowed five runs (four earned) over 5 1/3 innings in Tuesday's 8-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals, while his fastball velocity dropped more than one mph below his season average.

Over his last three starts, Ryan has surrendered 16 earned runs in 15 1/3 innings, seeing his ERA rise from 2.85 to 3.65. Shelton said the club wants to determine Ryan's physical condition, adding that the pitcher has been frustrated with his recent performances.
Ryan admitted the recent stretch has been difficult, saying he has been trying to get his body back to where it needs to be throughout the week. His scheduled start against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday is now uncertain pending the results of his medical evaluation.
The two-time All-Star owns a 6-8 record this season, while the Twins entered Wednesday one game behind the Cleveland Guardians in the race for the final American League Wild Card spot.
