Padres Strengthen Rotation by Acquiring Casey Mize from Tigers
The San Diego Padres bolstered their pitching staff before the MLB trade deadline by acquiring right-hander Casey Mize and infielder Gage Workman from the Detroit Tigers.
In return, Detroit received left-handed pitching prospect Kash Mayfield, ranked as the Padres' No. 2 prospect by MLB Pipeline, along with left-hander Jackson Wolf.

Mize, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, earned his first All-Star selection in 2025 after posting a 14-6 record with a 3.87 ERA. This season, the 29-year-old owns a 2.70 ERA through 16 starts, recording 85 strikeouts and just 19 walks.
Mize joins a Padres rotation that already features Robbie Ray, Walker Buehler, Michael King and JP Sears. Workman has appeared in 28 Major League games, including 16 this season, while playing second base, third base and shortstop. Mayfield, a 2024 first-round draft pick, is 3-1 with a 3.54 ERA in 15 starts at High-A Fort Wayne this season.
Jackson Wolf has spent the 2026 season with Triple-A El Paso, posting a 5-10 record and a 7.05 ERA in 24 appearances.
