Mendy's season over: Real Madrid hit by fresh injury blow

Ferland Mendy has been diagnosed with a tendon injury in the rectus femoris of his right leg, according to an official statement from Real Madrid.

The Frenchman’s season is effectively over as he joins a growing list of long-term absentees including Eder Militao, Rodrygo, and Arda Guler. The injury occurred just 14 minutes into Sunday’s match, with Mendy forced to leave the pitch in visible distress and replaced by Fran Garcia.

This latest setback is Mendy's fifth injury of the season, a campaign in which he has been restricted to just nine first-team appearances. The left-back may require surgery on the same leg that underwent an operation last year, with recovery potentially stretching up to five months.

Mendy will miss the crucial title-deciding Clasico against Barcelona this coming Sunday, further stretching Alvaro Arbeloa's defensive options. The 30-year-old’s future at the Bernabeu is increasingly uncertain as recurring muscular issues continue to plague his career since joining in 2019.

Real Madrid’s medical staff will monitor his progress in the coming days to determine if surgical intervention is necessary for the French defender.
