Diego Forlan Appointed Uruguay Interim Head Coach After World Cup Exit
Diego Forlan has been appointed as the new head coach of Uruguay's senior and Under-20 national teams, the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) announced.
The 47-year-old replaces Marcelo Bielsa, who left after Uruguay's winless group-stage exit at the FIFA World Cup. According to the AUF, Forlan will begin his new role immediately, first taking charge of the country's Under-20 team.

The federation described Forlan as a role model and one of Uruguay's greatest football figures, saying he will bring leadership and extensive international experience to the position.
Bielsa's departure followed the expiration of his contract after he admitted he had been unable to turn Uruguay's talented squad into a successful World Cup team. Local media also reported tensions between Bielsa and several players during the tournament.
Forlan earned 112 international caps, helped Uruguay win the 2011 Copa America, and was named the Best Player of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Since retiring in 2019, Forlan has coached Uruguayan clubs Peñarol and Atenas, and will now lead Uruguay in a series of international friendlies scheduled between September and November.
