The NBA Europe Advantage in Franchise Competition

For many years, the NBA was the first thing that came to mind when people thought of the franchise model. The competition that NBA Europe brought to Europe pushed the EuroLeague toward this model as well. While the EuroLeague announced that it had received a $1.2 billion bid for 20 potential franchises in the initial phase, this figure is close to the bid NBA Europe received for just its London franchise.

The NBA Europe Advantage in Franchise Competition

The hottest topic in European basketball these days is NBA Europe. While the new league—to be established as a joint venture between the NBA and FIBA—is expected to launch in October 2027, there is reportedly intense interest in the franchises to be established in 12 cities from investors, clubs, and even current EuroLeague teams.

There are many reasons for the intense interest in NBA Europe. The most important of these are the NBA’s 80 years of organizational expertise, its marketing power that reaches 2 billion fans worldwide, and, of course, the massive economic foundation on which the league is built.

$10 BILLION TO BE DISTRIBUTED OVER 10 YEARS

According to reports published in Turkey and abroad, NBA Europe is expected to distribute a total of $10 billion to the basketball ecosystem over the first 10 years. This budget alone is a very strong indicator of the financial contribution NBA Europe will make to European basketball. On the other hand, the greatest hope in the basketball world is for NBA Europe and the EuroLeague to find common ground. It is known that discussions regarding this are ongoing.

Furthermore, it is evident that the interest shown in NBA Europe has led to a strategic shift on the EuroLeague’s part as well. In an official statement released by the EuroLeague in recent days, it was announced that the franchise process for the current league has officially begun. The statement also included a summary of the initial proposals received under this model—a version of the franchise system synonymous with the NBA in the sports world, not just in Europe but globally. According to the statement, the EuroLeague has received a total of 20 proposals for potential franchises to date, representing a total investment of $1.2 billion. There are also differing opinions on whether the EuroLeague will truly base its growth model for the new era on this or if this move is merely a bargaining chip in ongoing negotiations with the NBA and FIBA.

INVESTORS HAVE DOUBLED THEIR OFFERS

Although the economic models of the two leagues differ, it is clear that these offers—averaging $60 million per franchise—remain at a very low level compared to NBA Europe. Again, according to reports circulating in Turkey and abroad, while NBA Europe received offers ranging from $500 million to $1 billion for all 12 permanent franchises, it was claimed that bids for the London and Paris franchises had surpassed the $1 billion mark; in fact, following the initial bids submitted on March 31, some investors reportedly increased their bids by 100 percent.

CAN IT TURN A $5 BILLION LOSS INTO A PROFIT?

Beyond all the models, the most important element of a lasting transformation in European basketball will be the resources provided to the clubs. While it is stated that the total losses of teams competing in the EuroLeague over the past 10 years have exceeded $5 billion, there has been no clear explanation as to whether the franchise model proposed by the EuroLeague will provide a positive contribution to team revenues. However, it is a fact that the one-time fees collected from franchises will place a significant burden on the new franchises joining the league in its early stages. With 8 new franchises joining the league alongside the 13 shareholder teams, plus teams coming from the EuroCup and organizations invited via the Wild Card, there are serious doubts about whether the EuroLeague can establish a sustainable economy. On the other hand, it is a fact that if the NBA Europe and the EuroLeague continue as separate leagues, the advertising and revenue pie will shrink even further.

CHAMPIONSHIP PRIZE TO BE MORE THAN TRIPLED

One of the most important issues regarding revenue is TV rights. According to recent media reports, viewership of the NBA on Amazon Prime has increased by 129 percent year-over-year, while the highly anticipated NBA Finals have become the most-watched final series in Europe since 2016. The NBA’s global brand power and expertise in television rights also represent a significant economic advantage.

One of the biggest criticisms leveled at the EuroLeague for many years has been that the prize money awarded to the winning team is far too low relative to the budgets spent. According to early rumors about NBA Europe, the champion of the league—set to begin in October 2027—could earn more than three times the prize money received by the EuroLeague’s most recent champion, Olympiakos. It is claimed that this revenue gap is one of the main reasons why so many EuroLeague teams continue to show interest in NBA Europe, even though they have extended their licensing agreements.
