Italian soccer legend Paolo Maldini is set to become the new "head of the technical staff" for the Italian national team. The Azzurri, who failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, have appointed Maldini to lead the team as part of their restructuring efforts. Italy’s new head coach will be announced shortly.
Paolo Maldini has been appointed technical director of the Italian national team. Giovanni Malago, president of the Italian Football Federation, officially announced the restructuring plan.

With the Azzurri unable to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, the team has been entrusted to Milan legend Maldini. Alongside 58-year-old Maldini, another Milan legend, Brazilian Leonardo, has also taken on the role of “advisor” in the new project.

Paolo Maldini, who held the same position at Serie A giant Milan from 2019 to 2023, visited Kadıköy last month to support Fenerbahçe presidential candidate Hakan Safi’s election campaign.
