Sebastien Desabre, head coach of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was devastated by the news of his father’s death as his team took the field for their Round of 32 match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo was eliminated from the tournament after losing 2-1 to England in the Round of 32, despite having taken a 1-0 lead, while on the same day, head coach Desabre’s father passed away.

The national team’s press officer stated at the post-match press conference, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our head coach’s father. We offer our deepest condolences.”
The French coach then left the press conference looking visibly upset.
